    Gravel calculator app: tons, yards and truckloads on your phone (2026)

    Gravel is measured in cubic yards but sold by the ton, and that one conversion is where most driveway and path estimates go wrong. A gravel calculator app is worth having when it does that conversion with the right density for the stone you're actually buying, and tells you how many truckloads that is. Here's what to look for, the formula to check any app with, and the free options.

    Short answer: on Android, our Gravel & Stone Calculator is free on Google Play: all of its calculators are free with ads, and one-time purchases remove ads or add contractor tools. On iPhone, a gravel calculator is part of Roofing Calculator & Estimator (version 1.7 and later). In a browser, use smartgravelcalculator.com.

    What a good gravel calculator app should do

    • Use a density per material. Pea gravel, #57 stone, crusher run, sand and river rock don't weigh the same. One "1.4 tons per yard" for everything can be off by a ton or more on a driveway.
    • Add compaction only where it applies. Crusher run and decomposed granite pack down when rolled, so you need extra. Clean stone like #57 or pea gravel doesn't compact much.
    • Give tons, cubic yards and truckloads together. Quarries quote in tons, landscape yards in yards, and delivery is per load.
    • Handle shapes and layers. Circles for fire pits, trenches for French drains, and a driveway built as base plus top layer.
    • Show the math. If you can see the density and depth it used, you can check it against your supplier's figures.
    • Work offline. Quarries and job sites are not known for signal.

    Gravel & Stone Calculator (Android): what's in it

    From the app's Google Play listing (checked October 4, 2026):

    • 42 calculators, all free: cubic yards, tons and truckloads from one area and depth, with the density row shown;
    • its own density for pea gravel, #57 and #8 stone, crusher run, sand, river rock, limestone, decomposed granite, rip rap and boulders;
    • compaction added for crusher run, #304 and decomposed granite, and not for raked stone, with the reason on screen;
    • driveways, paths, patio and paver base, fire-pit rings, slopes, trenches, French drains, dry wells and swales;
    • cost per ton or per yard, delivery, labor and markup; no account, works offline;
    • free with ads; Remove Ads and Pro Contractor are one-time purchases, and there's no subscription.

    The formula, with an example

    1. Cubic feet = length × width × depth (in feet). A 10 × 40 ft path at 3 inches deep: 10 × 40 × 0.25 = 100 cu ft.
    2. Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. 100 ÷ 27 = 3.7 cubic yards.
    3. Tons = cubic yards × density. Pea gravel is about 1.4 tons per cubic yard: 3.7 × 1.4 ≈ 5.2 tons.
    4. Pea gravel is raked, not rolled, so no compaction allowance. For crusher run, add roughly 15–25% for compaction.
    5. Round up to what your supplier sells, and confirm their density figure: it varies by quarry and moisture.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is the best free gravel calculator app?

    One that uses a separate density for each stone, adds compaction only for materials that compact, and gives tons, cubic yards and truckloads at once. Gravel & Stone Calculator for Android does that with 42 free calculators, supported by ads.

    Is there a gravel calculator app for iPhone?

    Yes. Roofing Calculator & Estimator on the App Store includes a gravel calculator from version 1.7, and the full gravel calculators also work in Safari at smartgravelcalculator.com.

    How do I convert cubic yards of gravel to tons?

    Multiply by the material's density. Pea gravel and #57 stone are around 1.4 tons per cubic yard; confirm the figure with your supplier.

    How many tons of pea gravel for a 10 x 40 ft path?

    At 3 inches deep that's about 3.7 cubic yards, or roughly 5.2 tons of pea gravel.
