    Roof pitch app: measure pitch with your phone (free, 2026)

    A roof pitch app turns your phone into an angle finder. Lay it on a rafter, the roof deck or the rake board, and it reads the slope. The useful ones also give you the answer in the form roofers use, rise in inches per 12 inches of run (such as 6/12), and carry it straight into the roof area and shingle count.

    This guide covers how phone pitch readings work, why the pitch matters, how a built-in level compares with a dedicated app, and what the free Pitch Finder in Roofing Calculator & Estimator does.

    How a phone measures roof pitch

    Phones have motion sensors that know which way is down. A pitch app reads the angle between the phone's edge and level ground, then converts it:

    • Pitch (x/12) = 12 × tan(angle). An angle of 26.6° is 6/12; 18.4° is 4/12; 33.7° is 8/12.
    • Slope % = tan(angle) × 100. A 6/12 roof has a 50% slope.

    Readings are only as good as the surface under the phone. Put it on a straight rafter or a flat run of deck, not on a lumpy ridge cap or a curled shingle, and take two or three readings in different spots.

    Why the pitch matters

    • Material quantities. A sloped roof has more surface than its footprint. At 6/12 the multiplier is about 1.118, so a 720 sq ft footprint is about 805 sq ft of roof. Guess the pitch low and you under-order shingles.
    • Safety rules. OSHA's construction fall-protection rules (29 CFR 1926.500, checked October 2, 2026) define a low-slope roof as one with a slope less than or equal to 4 in 12, and a steep roof as one with a slope greater than 4 in 12. The two are treated differently for fall protection.
    • Material choice. Shingle, metal and membrane manufacturers each set a minimum slope for their products. Check the product's installation instructions against your reading.

    Built-in level vs a roof pitch app

    Your phone may already have a level. Apple's support page for the iPhone Measure app's Level (checked October 2, 2026) says it shows whether an object is level or "how many degrees it varies from level", and that "measurements are approximate". You tap Level and hold the iPhone against an object.

    If you only need a degree reading now and then, the built-in level is fine; use the formula above to turn it into x/12. If you're estimating a roof, an app that keeps the pitch and runs the material math saves you the conversions.

    Pitch Finder: what the app does

    Roofing Calculator & Estimator (Smart Roofing Calculator on our site) is free on Google Play and the App Store, and its Pitch Finder is on the home screen. It uses the phone's motion sensors as an inclinometer:

    1. Place the phone on its side, flat against the roof surface or rake.
    2. Read the live angle, the pitch as x/12 and the slope %, with a slope diagram.
    3. Tap "Hold Reading" to freeze the value, then save it or export it to PDF.
    4. Use the pitch in the roof area, shingle and material calculators.

    Beyond the pitch, the app's Google Play listing (checked today) includes:

    • a roof pitch calculator from rise and run, and a pitch chart from 1/12 to 24/12 with degrees, percent and multipliers;
    • roof area in sq ft, m² and squares, shingle bundles with waste, starter strip and ridge cap;
    • sheathing, underlayment, ice and water shield, drip edge, flashing, metal panels and flat-roof membranes;
    • a full roof estimate, saved estimates, PDF export and a Job Cart material list;
    • offline use, feet or metres, and English or Spanish.

    A worked example: from pitch to bundles

    1. Pitch Finder reads 26.6°, which is 6/12.
    2. The footprint with overhangs is 24 ft × 30 ft = 720 sq ft.
    3. At 6/12 the multiplier is about 1.118, so the roof is 720 × 1.118 ≈ 805 sq ft, or 8.05 squares.
    4. Add 10% waste for a simple gable: 8.05 × 1.10 ≈ 8.86, so order 9 squares.
    5. At 3 bundles per square, that's 27 bundles, plus starter strip and ridge cap.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can my phone measure roof pitch?

    Yes. Phones have motion sensors that read the angle against level. A roof pitch app converts that angle to pitch: 12 × tan(angle) gives the rise per 12 inches of run, so 26.6° is 6/12.

    Is there a free roof pitch app for Android and iPhone?

    Yes. Roofing Calculator & Estimator is free on Google Play and the App Store. Its Pitch Finder shows degrees, x/12 and slope %, holds the reading, and saves or exports it to PDF.

    How accurate is a phone pitch reading?

    Close enough for estimating when the phone sits on a straight surface such as a rafter or flat deck. Apple notes its own Level measurements are approximate. Take two or three readings and confirm critical work with a level and tape.

    What counts as a steep roof?

    OSHA's construction rules (29 CFR 1926.500) define a steep roof as one with a slope greater than 4 in 12, and a low-slope roof as 4 in 12 or less.

    Does the app work offline?

    Yes. The Pitch Finder and every calculator run on the phone with no internet connection and no login.
