Roofing calculator: how to estimate shingles, squares & cost

Whether you're bidding a re-roof or pricing your own house, getting the materials and cost right is the difference between a clean job and a money-losing one. Here's the straight-line method roofers actually use.

Step 1 — Measure the roof area

Measure the length and width of every roof plane. Multiply L × W for each, then add them up. That's your flat footprint in square feet.

Step 2 — Adjust for pitch

A 6/12 pitch isn't flat — it adds about 12% to the surface area. Multiply your footprint by the pitch factor:

    • 4/12 pitch → ×1.054
    • 6/12 pitch → ×1.118
    • 8/12 pitch → ×1.202
    • 12/12 pitch → ×1.414

Every other pitch, from 1/12 to 24/12, is in the roof pitch chart with its multiplier and angle in degrees.

Step 3 — Convert to squares

Roofing is sold in squares. 1 square = 100 sq ft. Divide your adjusted area by 100 to get squares.

Step 4 — Add waste factor

Always add 10% waste for simple roofs, 15% for cut-up or hip roofs. Cuts, valleys, starter strips, and ridge caps all eat material.

    Step 5 — Bundle math

Most architectural shingles run 3 bundles per square. So 25 squares × 3 = 75 bundles.

    Cost estimating

Material is roughly $100–$180/square for shingles depending on quality. Underlayment and fasteners add ~$25/square. Labor varies wildly by region — $150–$450/square is common. Use your local rates.

    Common mistakes

    • Forgetting the pitch factor (huge underestimate)
    • Ignoring waste on cut-up roofs
    • Forgetting starter, ridge cap, drip edge, and underlayment
    • Quoting before measuring

Use a calculator that handles pitch, waste, and bundle math in one screen — it'll save you the back-of-napkin errors that eat profit. The free Smart Roofing Calculator runs steps 1 to 5 in the browser, with no sign-up.
