    Best free roofing calculator app (2026): app vs web vs spreadsheet

    A roofing calculator app should answer three questions on the roof, not back at the truck: how big is this roof once the pitch is counted, how many squares and bundles do I order, and what will it cost. Most "free" options answer one of the three. This guide compares the four ways people actually do roof math (a dedicated app, a web calculator, a spreadsheet and the phone's own calculator) and shows which one fits which job.

    Short answer: if you estimate roofs more than once or twice a year, use a dedicated app that works offline and keeps the pitch, area and material counts in one place. Our pick, because we build it and use it, is Roofing Calculator & Estimator: free on Google Play and the App Store, no account, with ads. For a one-off estimate on a laptop, the free web calculator at smartroofingcalculator.com does the same core math with no install.

    We've written more about the spreadsheet route in roofing app vs spreadsheet. Short version: spreadsheets are great for pricing, poor for measuring on a ladder.

    What a good free roofing calculator app should do

    • Turn a footprint and pitch into true roof area. A 6/12 roof has about 11.8% more surface than its footprint (multiplier ≈ 1.118). Skip the pitch and you under-order.
    • Read the pitch for you. A phone's motion sensors can measure the angle; see our roof pitch app guide for how that works and how accurate it is.
    • Count materials in purchase units. Squares (100 sq ft), bundles, rolls of underlayment, pieces of drip edge and ridge cap, not just square feet.
    • Add waste you can see. A simple gable needs less waste than a cut-up hip roof with valleys. The waste factor should be visible and editable.
    • Work with no signal and no login. Roofs are often where reception is worst.
    • Export something a customer or supplier can read. A PDF estimate or a material list.
    • Tell you the business model up front. On Google Play, check the "Contains ads" and "In-app purchases" labels and the Data safety section before you install any calculator.

    Roofing Calculator & Estimator: what's in it

    From its Google Play listing (checked October 3, 2026), the app includes:

    • roof area in sq ft, m² and squares from length, width and pitch;
    • a roof pitch calculator from rise and run, a pitch chart from 1/12 to 24/12, and a camera Pitch Finder;
    • shingle bundles with waste, starter strip, ridge cap, sheathing (plywood/OSB), underlayment and ice & water shield;
    • metal roof panels and screws, cedar shakes, flat-roof membranes (EPDM, TPO, mod-bit) and roof coatings;
    • drip edge, valley, step flashing, skylight and chimney cricket tools, plus roof cost per square;
    • offline use, feet or metres, English or Spanish;
    • deck, fence, drywall, tile, insulation, sod and gravel calculators for the other jobs around the house.

    A worked example you can check by hand

    1. Footprint including overhangs: 30 ft × 40 ft = 1,200 sq ft.
    2. Pitch: 6/12, so the multiplier is about 1.118. Roof area ≈ 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,342 sq ft, or 13.42 squares.
    3. Waste for a simple gable: 10%. 13.42 × 1.10 ≈ 14.8, so order 15 squares.
    4. Most architectural and 3-tab shingles come three bundles to a square (check the wrapper), so that's 45 bundles, plus starter and ridge cap.

    If an app gives you a very different answer for the same inputs, look at its waste setting and whether it counted the pitch. For the reasoning behind each step, read our roofing calculator guide.

    When the web calculator is enough

    If you're pricing your own house once, you don't need an app on your phone. The Smart Roofing Calculator website runs in any browser and covers roof area, pitch and shingle bundles, with a roof pitch calculator for rise and run. Contractors who quote on site usually prefer the app because it works offline and keeps saved estimates.

    Prefer a spreadsheet?

    For office pricing with your own material and labor rates, our roofing estimate takeoff spreadsheet on Gumroad lays out the same calculation in rows you can edit. Many roofers use both: the app to measure, the spreadsheet to price. Need a quote to send? Instant Quote Maker turns the numbers into a PDF quote on the phone.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is the best free roofing calculator app?

    Pick one that works offline, counts the pitch, gives materials in squares and bundles, and shows its waste factor. Roofing Calculator & Estimator from Dixon App Studio does all of that, free with ads, on Google Play and the App Store.

    Is there a free roofing calculator app for iPhone?

    Yes. Roofing Calculator & Estimator is on the App Store. From version 1.7 it also includes deck, fence, drywall, insulation, tile, sod and gravel calculators.

    How many bundles of shingles do I need per square?

    Most 3-tab and architectural shingles are packed three bundles to a square (100 sq ft), but check the wrapper: some heavier shingles are four or five bundles per square.

    Do I need an app, or is a web calculator enough?

    For a single estimate on a laptop, the free web calculator at smartroofingcalculator.com is enough. If you estimate on site, an app is better because it works offline and saves estimates.
