"Brain training app" covers everything from a single memory game to a subscription program with a daily plan and a progress dashboard. Before you pick one, it helps to know what these apps can honestly do, which features keep you coming back, and which ones are there mainly to sell a subscription. This guide covers all three, with a seven-day routine you can try in any app.
Short answer: choose a brain games app with short, varied games (memory, attention, logic and maths), a daily puzzle or plan, offline play and a pricing model you can live with. Ours, Mind Skills Arcade, has 122 games, works offline with no account, and is free on Google Play and the App Store with ads; a one-time purchase removes them, and there's no subscription.
What brain training can and can't do
Practising a game reliably makes you better at that game, and closely related tasks. Evidence that app training raises general intelligence or prevents memory loss is weak, and in 2016 the US Federal Trade Commission fined one well-known brain training company over exactly those claims. So treat a brain training app the way you'd treat a crossword habit: a few focused minutes that keep you mentally busy, measured against your own past scores, not a medical treatment. Be wary of any app that promises more.
What to look for in a brain training app
- Variety across skills. Working memory (n-back, digit span), attention (Stroop, flanker), logic (Sudoku, nonograms) and maths. Playing only the game you're best at is how people plateau.
- Short sessions. Two to five minutes per game, so ten minutes covers three or four skills.
- A reason to come back tomorrow. A daily puzzle that everyone gets, a streak, or a short program with a day-by-day plan.
- Honest scores. Your personal bests and trends, not an invented "brain age".
- Works offline, no account. The commute is where most people play.
- Clear pricing. Check whether the free version is a trial, ad-supported, or a few games with the rest locked behind a subscription. Google Play shows "Contains ads" and "In-app purchases" on every listing.
- Comfortable for every age. Untimed modes and adjustable difficulty matter for older players and anyone who finds countdown timers stressful.
Mind Skills Arcade: what's in it
From the app's Google Play listing (checked October 4, 2026):
- 122 games in two-to-five-minute sessions: Dual N-Back (with a true dual mode), Digit Span, Number Memory and the chimp test for working memory; Stroop, Flanker, Trail Making and Reaction Time for attention; Sudoku, Nonogram, Futoshiki, Skyscrapers, Tower of Hanoi and brain teasers for logic; Speed Math, Times Tempo and Percent Drill for mental maths; plus a reading speed test, word games and spatial puzzles;
- a Daily Puzzle that is the same for every player, with a streak, a streak shield and a share card, and short programs such as the untimed Gentle Start;
- offline play, no account, and a backup file to move progress to a new phone;
- free with ads; an optional one-time purchase removes them.
Many of the games also run free in a browser at mindskillsarcade.com, including a daily puzzle with a par to beat.
A seven-day routine for any brain training app
- Day 1: play one game from each skill once, without trying hard, to get a baseline.
- Days 2–6: ten minutes a day: the daily puzzle, one memory game, one attention game, one logic or maths game. Rotate which ones.
- Day 7: replay the day-1 games and compare. Expect clear gains on the games you practised; that's normal and it's the honest measure.
- Keep the streak going with the daily puzzle alone on busy days. Consistency beats long sessions.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free brain training app?
Pick one with varied short games across memory, attention, logic and maths, a daily puzzle or plan, offline play and clear pricing. Mind Skills Arcade has 122 games, works offline with no account, and is free with ads on Google Play and the App Store; a one-time purchase removes the ads.
Do brain training apps really work?
You get better at the games you practise and at closely related tasks. Claims that apps raise IQ or prevent dementia are not well supported, so use your own scores over time as the measure.
How long should I use a brain games app each day?
About ten minutes: a daily puzzle plus one memory, one attention and one logic or maths game. Daily consistency matters more than long sessions.
Is there a brain training app without a subscription?
Yes. Mind Skills Arcade has no subscription: every game is free with ads, and an optional one-time purchase removes them.
