Quantity breaks vs. bundles on Shopify: which offer does your store need?

"Quantity breaks", "volume discounts", "bundles" and "BOGO" get used as if they were the same thing, and the Shopify App Store mixes them in one search result. They solve different problems. Picking the right one first saves you from paying for a suite you only use a tenth of, or from building a bundle when a simple per-unit discount would do.

    The short version

    OfferWhat the shopper doesBest for
Quantity breaks (tiered pricing)Buys more units of the same product, or of a set of products, and pays less per unitConsumables, refills, gifts bought in multiples, B2B case quantities
Fixed bundleBuys a set of different products you chose, for one priceStarter kits, "complete the look", routines
Mix-and-match / build-a-boxPicks N items from a collection for a set price or discountSnacks, cosmetics, socks: anything with many small variants
BOGO / free giftGets an item free or discounted when buying anotherClearing stock, launching a product, seasonal promotions

When quantity breaks are the right tool

    • People already buy more than one. Check your orders: if a meaningful share already contains 2+ units of a product, a tier rewards and grows what's happening.
    • Your margin improves with volume. Shipping and packing cost less per unit in a bigger order, which pays for the discount.
    • You sell to trade customers. Wholesale buyers think in case sizes; tiers and pack multiples match that.
    • You want it simple. One discount, one table under the price, no new product pages to build.

    When a bundle is better

    • Nobody needs two of the same thing. A second identical blender doesn't make sense; a blender plus a recipe book does.
    • You want to move a slow product. Pair it with a best-seller.
    • The set is the product. Gift sets and kits are bundles by nature.

    Can you run both?

Yes, but decide how they combine. In Shopify, each discount has combination settings: product discounts can be allowed to combine with other product discounts, order discounts or shipping discounts. If a quantity break and a bundle can both apply to the same line, test the cart to see which wins, and make sure the result is a price you're happy with.

    Suite or focused app?

Bundle suites (Kaching, Pumper and others) cover quantity breaks, bundles, gifts and upsells in one app, usually priced on the extra revenue they report. A focused quantity-break app does only tiered pricing, usually for a flat price or free. If you'll use three or more offer types, a suite makes sense. If tiers are the job, keep it focused. We compared the free plans side by side in free quantity break apps for Shopify.

    Setting up quantity breaks

You can build tiers natively with one automatic discount per tier (step-by-step in how to set up quantity breaks in Shopify). An app adds what the native route lacks: the tier table on the product page, the "add 2 more to save 10%" cart message and badges on collection pages.

Tierwise is a focused quantity-break app: percentage, amount-off or fixed unit-price tiers, applied by Shopify at checkout through Shopify Functions, with wholesale tiers and order limits on Pro. It doesn't build bundles, BOGO or free-gift offers; pair it with a bundle app if you need those.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between quantity breaks and a bundle?

Quantity breaks lower the per-unit price when someone buys more units (buy 3 save 5%, buy 6 save 10%). A bundle sells a set of different products together for one price.

Can quantity breaks and bundle discounts apply to the same order in Shopify?

They can if each discount's combination settings allow it. Test a cart that qualifies for both to confirm the final price.
