Free quantity break apps for Shopify: what each free plan really includes

Search the Shopify App Store for "quantity breaks" and nearly every result says free plan available. That label covers very different things. Some free plans stop at a revenue figure, some at an order count, some at a number of discounted products, and one is free only on development stores. Here is what the free plan of each popular quantity-break app actually includes, taken from each app's own App Store listing on October 10, 2026.

The four ways a "free" plan gets capped

    • Revenue the app generates. The app counts sales it thinks it caused and asks you to upgrade past a threshold. Cheap to start, but the bill grows with your success, and the counting method is the vendor's.
    • Orders per month. The cap counts every order in your store, not just discounted ones, so a busy month can push you onto a paid tier.
    • Products or campaigns. Fine for one hero product, limiting if you want tiers across a catalogue.
    • Development stores only. You can try it while building a store, but a live store pays from day one.

Bundle suites vs. focused quantity-break apps

Most of the big names (Kaching, Pumper and similar) are bundle and upsell suites: quantity breaks are one offer type next to bundles, free gifts, BOGO and cart upsells. If you want all of that in one place, a suite is reasonable, and the ratings above show many merchants are happy with them. If all you want is "buy more, pay less per unit", a focused app is simpler to set up and usually cheaper to keep.

Not sure which you need? Read quantity breaks vs. bundles first.

What to check before you install any of them

    1. Does the discount apply at checkout? Look for apps built on Shopify Functions (the listing often says "Works with Checkout"). Price changes made only in theme scripts can be skipped by Buy It Now or express checkout.
    2. What happens at the cap? Read the plan line on the listing: does the widget stop, or do you get an upgrade prompt?
    3. Does it edit your theme code? Theme app blocks are removed cleanly on uninstall; code injected into theme files may not be.
    4. Test with a real cart. One under the first tier, then each tier, then Buy It Now. Our quantity breaks setup guide has a test list.

    Where Tierwise fits

We built Tierwise because we wanted a free plan with no meter on it. Quantity-break campaigns are unlimited on Free, with every storefront widget (product-page tier table, cart "add 2 more to save 10%" message, collection badges). It runs as a Shopify Functions discount, so it holds at checkout, including Buy It Now. Pro ($9.99/month) adds wholesale tiers by customer tag and minimum, maximum and multiple-of order limits. It is new on the App Store and has no reviews yet, so weigh that too. It does tiered quantity pricing and order limits only; it is not a bundle builder.

    Frequently asked questions

Is there a completely free quantity breaks app for Shopify?

Several apps have a free plan, but most cap it by revenue the app generates, by monthly orders or by the number of discounted products. Tierwise's free plan has unlimited quantity-break campaigns with no order or revenue cap; its paid plan adds wholesale tiers and order limits.

Can I make quantity breaks in Shopify without an app?

Yes, with one automatic discount per tier using a minimum quantity of items. Shoppers won't see the tiers on the product page and there's no cart nudge, which is what the apps add.

Where do these prices come from?

Each app's own Shopify App Store listing, read on October 10, 2026. Apps change their plans, so check the listing before installing.
