How to sell in packs or multiples on Shopify
Sell products in packs or multiples of 6, 12 or 24 on Shopify: pack-size variants, checkout rules that enforce multiples, and pack discounts.

Disclosure: we make Tierwise, mentioned below. The variant method needs no app.
Some products only make sense in packs: screws in 50s, cans by the case, wholesale orders in multiples of 6. Shopify sells single units by default. There are three ways to sell in packs or multiples, and they suit different stores.
Option 1: pack sizes as variants (built in)
Best when shoppers choose between a few fixed packs, each with its own price.
- Open the product and add an option called Pack size.
- Add values such as Single, Pack of 6, Case of 24.
- Give each variant its own price and SKU, so the case can be cheaper per unit.
- Track stock per variant, or use one SKU and adjust stock in your warehouse system if packs are made up on demand.
The catch: stock for "Pack of 6" and "Single" is counted separately, so selling a case doesn't reduce the singles. That's fine for pre-packed goods, awkward for loose stock.
Option 2: write the rule and check orders by hand
Put "sold in multiples of 6" on the product page and in the cart, and fix odd quantities when you pack the order. It costs nothing and works for a handful of wholesale orders a week, but it relies on shoppers reading and on you emailing the ones who don't.
Option 3: enforce multiples at checkout
Shopify can block a checkout that breaks a rule using checkout rules (Settings → Checkout → Checkout rules), which apps provide through Shopify Functions. A pack-size rule stops a checkout with 7 cans when the multiple is 6 and tells the shopper why. Our order quantity limits guide covers minimum and maximum limits the same way.
Discount by the pack
Pack pricing often goes with a pack discount: "each full case of 24 is 10% off". Natively, the closest is an automatic discount with a minimum quantity of 24, but it then discounts every item, including the 3 loose cans on top of the case.
With an app: pack limits and pack discounts together
Tierwise does both sides. Its discount can apply in multiples, so only complete packs get the pack price, and the product-page tier table shows shoppers the pack prices before they add to cart. Its order limits (Pro) add minimum, maximum and multiple-of rules per product or collection, enforced at checkout with your own message. Wholesale customers can get their own tiers by customer tag.
Which to choose
- Pre-packed goods, a few pack sizes: variants.
- Loose stock sold in multiples: a checkout rule for the multiple, plus a pack discount.
- Wholesale only: the rule and pack prices for tagged customers. See wholesale pricing in Shopify.
Frequently asked questions
Can Shopify force customers to order in multiples?
Not on its own. Checkout rules from apps built on Shopify Functions can block a checkout whose quantity isn't a multiple you set, and show the shopper a message.
How do I sell a case and single units of the same product?
Add a Pack size option with variants for Single and Case, each with its own price and SKU. Stock is tracked per variant.
